Chemically, these plasticizers are completely saturated and thus possess remarkable stability and are not affected by heat, cold, ultra violet light, oxygen, ozone, or other factors that contribute to the deterioration of organic materials. Compounds in which Resoflex R-296 or R-446 serve as the plasticizer exhibit the following properties:

  • Non-migratory
  • Excellent stability on long ageing under all conditions
  • Essentially zero volatility
  • No plasticizer migration
  • Excellent resistance to oils, fats, grease and gasoline
  • Good low temperature flexibility
  • Good water resistance
  • Excellent flexibility and toughness
  • UV stable
  • Color stable
  • Not water soluble

These plasticizers are being used very successfully by industry in the following applications:

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Resoflex R-296 is a very pale colored liquid of syrup consistency having the following typical analysis:

Resoflex R-296 is widely used as a plasticizer for remoistenable adhesives in critical applications.


Resoflex R-296 is insoluble in water, alcohols, aliphatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, turpentine and dipentene. It is completely soluble in acetone, ethyl acetate, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, "Cellosolve", Cyclohexanone, Dioxane and similar type solvents.


Although Resoflex R-296 is not soluble in either water or alcohols, it will tolerate (imbibe) the following amounts by weight of different alcohols:


Methanol 160%
Ethanol 80%
Isopropyi Alcohol 40%

Because of the above, Resoflex R-296 is soluble in alcohol water mixtures. The following mixtures by weight are good solvents:


Methanol-Water mixture 15-30% water
Ethanol-Water mixture 15-30% water
Isopropyi Alcohol-Water mixture 10-15% water

Resoflex R-296 may be dissolved in water by adding 10 parts by weight of 28 % ammonia water to 100 parts by weight of the plasticizer and then dissolving in water. Depending on the purity of the water, clear solutions are obtained which are stable from several hours to days. On long standing, this ammonia solution will separate into two layers and the resin is then no longer soluble in the water layer. Because of its hydrophilic nature, Resoflex R-296 may be incorporated into resin emulsions with mechanical stirring. The ammonia solution can, of course, be incorporated into these emulsions merely by addition. Poly vinyl acetate emulsions containing Resoflex R-296 both with and without ammonia have been stable for periods of more than one year.

Resoflex R-296 is compatible with and yields flexible, clear, glossy films when compounded with the following film forming materials:


  • Polyvinyl Acetate
  • Nitrocellulose
  • Cellulose Acetate
  • Nylon
  • Polyvinyl Alcohol (containing more than 33 % Polyvinyl Acetate)
  • Epoxy Compounds

It is not compatible with the following materials:


  • Polyvinyl chloride
  • Vinyl copolymer resins
  • Natural and Synthetic Rubber
  • Chlorinated Rubber
  • Shellac
  • Casein
  • Ethyl Cellulose

Resoflex R-446 possesses similar properties to Resoflex R-296 but has a much higher molecular weight and viscosity. It is particularly useful in those adhesive compositions which must have a high initial tack.



Toxicity

Resoflex R-296 is considered safe for use in adhesives for postage stamps by the Food and Drug Administration.


Resoflex R-460 is a water soluble high acid number hydrophilic half ester that has good compatibility with polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol. It imparts exceptional tack to polyvinyl acetate adhesives. Because of its high acidity Resoflex R-460 contributes to the adhesion of polyvinyl acetate to hard-to-bond surfaces. Its hydrophilic nature permits its easy dispersion in emulsions with a minimum of effort. Resoflex R-460 is one of the most economical chemical plasticizers. Resoflex R-460 is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in food packaging adhesives.


RESOFLEX R-766 is similar to Resoflex R-296 but has a much higher hydroxyl content. It is therefore more hydrophilic and finds use in certain remoistenable gums.


Resoflex R-804 is a non-hydroscopic resinous plasticizer for remoistenable adhesives based on dextrine. It provides a dextrine film that will not dry out and curl under low humidity conditions nor will it block under high temperature and high humidity conditions. This is indeed a unique product since only hydroscopic materials such as glycols and glycerine have been available (to the present) for making dextrine films flexible.

Resoflex R-296 4.5

  1. Add Polyvinyl alcohol to cool water, disperse and add defoamer.
  2. Heat to 18^° - 190° F. hold for 30-40 min. at temp.
  3. Add Polyvinyl Acetate Emulsion and mix 15-20 min.
  4. Add Resoflex R-296, mix 5 minutes then adjust viscosity to 3800-4200 cps @ 25° C. and fill package.
